Cummins retires part numbers and issues replacements all the time. The catalog behind this site holds 12,815 such records. Here is how to read them, and what to order.

What a supersession is

When Cummins changes a part — a new material, a design fix, a consolidated variant — it usually gives the new part a new number and marks the old number as superseded by it. The old part is not recalled: whatever is already on shelves keeps its old number and stays saleable. From that date on, factories ship only the new number.

Reading the chain

Every part page here shows the chain newest first. The top number is the one that ships today. Each line below it shows a number that was replaced and the date it was replaced, from Cummins supersession records. A page can also list several older numbers that were all merged into one new part.

Which number to order

What a supersession does not tell you

Supersession records say which number replaced which, and when. They do not say why, and they do not say whether the old part is still made. When a chain ends in a number that is itself out of production, we say so in the quote rather than guess.
